Adultcare Assistance Celebrates Caregivers
March 21, 2006
Karen Wellert, president of Adultcare Assistance, honored three Arizona All-Star Caregivers Award finalists at a private luncheon held on March 21 at the Palmbrook Country Club's Vista Grill Restaurant in Sun City. The guests of honor being recognized for their outstanding service as caregivers included Louise Bajus and Dorothy Mills, both of Sun City, and Rosina Lillywhite of Glendale.

Bajus, a self-employed caregiver, was presented the Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award and received a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond. The runner-ups, Mills and Lillywhite, each were awarded savings bonds for $100. Wellert founded the semi-annual Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award in 2005 as part of Adultcare Assistance's Abundant Community Program, and the March 2006 event included the first business contribution with Theater Works donating 2 tickets to the award-winning Bajus.

The countless hours of devotion that caregivers like Bajus provide added up to numerous nomination letters expressing appreciation for her many roles as nurse, chef, chauffeur, housekeeper, companion and friend. The 75-year-old Bajus has provided home care services for thirty years, and credits many of her referrals to Rev. Ross Parrott of the Lakeview United Methodist Church.

"I am blessed with all of the people who came into my life," Bajus said at the luncheon. Likewise, those same sentiments were shared by the many letters of nomination received by Adultcare Assistance deeming her a worthy candidate of the Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award title. Among the qualities that brought her recognition as an outstanding caregiver were Bajus' "selfless dedication to the care and love she gives to each of her patients," and her "willingness to go above and beyond" the average caregiver with "her energy, smiles and positive ways."

At 86-years-old Mills has volunteered at the Sun Valley Lodge for twenty years where she became a resident in the year 2000. "In mid-December I 'retired' after fifteen years as a volunteer with the Sun Valley Lodge Thrift Shop," Mills recounted. Her skills honed while directing the shop's operation now benefit the chapel by raising monies for enlarged-print songbooks and setting up the weekly service. "I love my work with my fellowman. It's very rewarding," Mills noted. "On my Healthcare visits I bring flowers and enjoy reading to the residents."

A caregiver for twenty years, Lillywhite has taken her mother under her wing to provide her with personal attention and care. "I have dedicated my life to caring for my 86-year-old mother." Lillywhite shared, "She's my teacher and I see her reflection in family members."

The Arizona All-Star Caregivers Award panel of judges reviewed numerous qualified entry forms before narrowing the honors to these three special caregivers. Judging the entries was an award panel of social service professionals including: Sun City Community Foundation's, Jim Green; Sun City Fire Department's, Stacy Bodenstedt; Sun City West Fire Department's, Debra Johnson; Interfaith Community of Care, Michelle Dionisio; and Adultcare Assistance's, Karen Wellert. The deadline for nominations for the next Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award is midnight June 30, 2006. The nominated caregiver may be a family member; volunteer with a hospital or hospice organization; medical professional; private caregiver; or an employee at an independent, assisted living, or skilled nursing community.

The nomination forms are available online at www.adultcareassistance.com, or at the Adultcare Assistance corporate office located at 10404 W. Coggins Dr., Suite 108, in Sun City. Sheriff to Hold Senior Forum in Sun City February 21, 2006
You probably know him as "America's Toughest Sheriff", It's a name given to Sheriff, Joe Arpaio by the media years ago and he certainly has earned as the head of the nation's fourth largest Sheriff's Office. On Tuesday, February 21, 2006 at 9:00 a.m. "America's Toughest Sheriff," Sheriff Joe Arpaio, will participant in an informal forum speaking to seniors. The event will take place at the Sun City Library, Hoover Room, 16828 N. 99th Avenue, Sun City.

See related article in The Arizona Republic.

This free event is open to the public and is sponsored by Adultcare Assistance Homecare. Seating is limited. Please call 623-977-2223 for reservations.

But even before he became Sheriff in 1993, Joe Arpaio was one tough law man. The same is true for his chain gangs, which contribute thousands of dollars of free labor to the community. The male chain gang, and the world's first-ever female and juvenile chain gangs clean streets, paint over graffiti, and bury the indigent in the county cemetery.

Equally impressive are the Sheriff's get-tough policies. For example, he banned smoking, coffee, movies, pornographic magazines, and unrestricted TV in all jails. He has the cheapest meals in the U.S., too. The average meal costs about 15 cents, and inmates are fed only twice daily, to cut the labor costs of meal delivery.

Another program Arpaio is very well known for is the pink undershorts he makes all inmates wear. Years ago, when the Sheriff learned that inmates were stealing jailhouse white boxers, Arpaio had all inmate underwear dyed pink for better inventory control.

The same is true for the Sheriff's handcuffs. When they started disappearing, he ordered pink handcuffs as a replacement. And later, when the Sheriff learned the calming, psychological effects of the color pink - sheets, towels, socks - everything inmates wear, except for the old fashioned black and white striped uniform, were dyed pink.

Arpaio has started another controversial program, the website http://www.mcso.orgso that all those arrested (about 300 per day) are recorded on the Sheriff's website as they are booked and processed into jail. Over 500,000 hits daily come into the website, making it one of the most visible law enforcement sites on the Web.

In addition to these tough measures, the Sheriff has launched rehabilitative programs like Hard Knocks High, the only accredited high school under a Sheriff in an American jail, and ALPHA, an anti-substance-abuse program that has greatly reduced recidivism.

As chief law enforcement officer for the county, Arpaio continues to reduce crime with hard-hitting enforcement methods. His deputies and detectives have solved several high-profile murder cases, including nine child murders.

The posse, whose ranks have increased to 3,000 members under Arpaio, is the nation's largest volunteer posse. Posse men and women help in search and rescue and other traditional police work as well as in special operations like rounding up deadbeat parents, fighting prostitution, patrolling malls during the holidays, and investigating animal cruelty complaints. The posse's contributions are invaluable and essentially free to taxpayers.

No wonder Sheriff Arpaio has been profiled in over 1,500 newspapers, magazines, and TV news programs worldwide. His leadership and the excellent work of his staff have catapulted the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office into the ranks of elite law enforcement agencies.

On a personal note, Sheriff Arpaio and his wife Ava have been married for over 47 years and have two children, both residing in the Phoenix area. The Arpaios have three grandchildren. Arpaio looks forward to many more years as Sheriff of Maricopa County.

A Pharmacist's Point of View
January 1, 2006
Making Sense of the New Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage
On January 1, 2006, Medicare Part D took effect. There is a period of grace until May 15, 2006 to select the plan that best suits the individual's needs before any penalties start to accrue, but a decision needs to be made soon.

“Many senior citizens are having a difficult time sorting out the details of Medicare Part D because of the many variations in rules and benefits from state to state and company to company,” says Karen Wellert, President of Adultcare Assistance. “Our seminars give us the chance to reach out to the community and provide senior citizens with valuable information. The people who show up seem to like the fact that we can help them understand the new prescription program.”

The next free seminar is entitled, “A Pharmacist's Point of View - Making Sense of the New Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage” and will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 17th from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at Sun City Library-Hoover Room, 16828 N. 99th Avenue, Sun City, AZ. The seminar is aimed at seniors and their friends, family members, and caregivers. Others interested in learning about Medicare D and resources available to assist them with making informed decisions are also encouraged to attend.

A Walgreen’s Licensed Pharmacist will be present to answer specific issues. “We feel that it will be of great value in having a pharmacist available to answer any questions," says Wellert. Other issues to be addressed include

A description of the new Medicare Part D drug coverage program.
Selection of individually appropriate plans.
The Medicare Prescription Drug Plan enrollment process.
This is the fifth informational community seminar sponsored by Adultcare Assistance and The Patient’s Advocate. The seminar is free. Reservations may be secured by calling Adultcare Assistance at 623-977-2223.
