Turkey Giving
November 16, 2005
St. Mary's Westside Food Bank Alliance will distribute 12,000 turkeys this holiday season (Thanksgiving and Christmas). 3,600 have already been purchased and 8,400 are needed from the public.

When Adultcare Assistance caregivers heard that Wellert was donating 500 pounds of turkeys they have asked to join in and increased the donation of turkeys to over 700 pounds this year. “Our caregivers are the most caring individuals, we have lots to be thankful this holiday season; Wellert said, this donation is an expression of our gratitude. Health Care Decision Week Seminar
Monday November 7, 2005
The Arizona Legislature and Governor Janet Napolitano have proclaimed the week of November 6, 2005 as Health Care Decisions Week.
The recent publicity surrounding the case of Terry Schiavo in Florida demonstrates the importance of talking about your wishes with loved ones and putting your wishes in writing. Arizona law strongly supports the right of an adult to make future medical treatment choices. Future health care decisions, when written down, become advance directives.
The public is invited to a free presentation on Advance Directives sponsored by Adultcare Assistance at the Sun City Library, 16828 N. 99th Avenue, on Monday November 9 at 9 a.m. Free living will and health care power of attorney forms will be distributed. Details of the new Arizona Advance Directive Registry will be discussed.
It is your right to decide. Give your family and loved ones a gift by planning ahead and completing your advance directives.

HCR 2021
Introduced by Representatives Lopez L, Garcia M, Senator Miranda: Representatives Aguirre A, Alvarez, Bradley, Downing, Gallardo, Kirkpatrick, Landrum Taylor, Lopes, Lujan, Prezelski, Sinema, Tom, Senators Giffords, Soltero
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF NOVEMBER 6, 2005 AS HEALTH CARE DECISIONS WEEK IN ARIZONA.
Whereas, it is important for people to make health care decisions before they are needed; and Whereas, health care planning is a process, rather than a single decision, that helps people think about the kind of care they would want if they become seriously ill or incapacitated, encourages them to talk with their loved ones and doctors and assists them in writing down their wishes; and Whereas, advance directives give people the ability to document their wishes and identify the person to speak for them should they become unable to speak for themselves; and Whereas, introducing these issues in community settings can help people begin conversations about their health care wishes with a family member, close friend, physician or faith leader; and Whereas, Arizona has a number of local coalitions throughout the state that are working to involve individuals and families in health care planning through educational forums, discussion groups, speaker's bureaus and training; and Whereas, several Arizona organizations representing health care providers, consumers and local coalitions have joined together to sponsor a week-long focus on health care decisions.
Therefore Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the State of Arizona, the Senate concurring:
- That Members of the Legislature proclaim the week of November 6, 2005 as Health Care Decisions Week in the State of Arizona and encourage all citizens to think and talk with loved ones about their wishes for medical care.
- That the Secretary of State of the State of Arizona transmit copies of this Resolution to health care coalitions and organizations throughout Arizona.
HCR 2021 passed the Committee on Health unamended.

Arizona All Star Caregiver Award
September 13, 2005
Adultcare Assistance President Karen Wellert has announced the formation of yet another exciting program. The Arizona All Star Caregiver Award will be given twice a year in recognition of caregiving excellence. The award recipient will receive a $1,000 US savings bond, to be presented at a luncheon in his or her honor. The next award will be announced on January 15, 2005.
Wellert's intention is to open the awards to a wide range of caregivers. As she says, "All Star Caregivers come in all sizes, groups and personalities: family members, volunteers with hospitals or hospice organizations, professionals and service individuals who care for us-such as firefighters and posse volunteers. He or she may be the neighbor or family member who is always there for you, or a professional caregiver, whether they are self-employed or work for a home care agency. Perhaps it is that special employee at an assisted or skilled living facility or the case manager who goes the extra mile. And don't forget the community leaders who 'fight the good fight' for caregivers. We invite you to nominate your favorite Arizona All Star Caregiver, or even nominate yourself"
Karen Wellert, herself a finalist for the Golden Heart of Business Award, has a reputation for recognizing and rewarding excellence. The Northwest Valley Chamber of Commerce chose Adultcare Assistance, out of more than 700 member businesses, as Business of the Year for 2004. Wellert accepted the honor on behalf of her staff-then wrote a personal note of thanks to each and every employee.
The deadline for nominations is December 31, 2005. All entries will be screened and a distinguished panel of social service professionals will review the five finalists. Members of the award panel include: Jim Green, of the Sun City Community Foundation, Stacy Bodenstedt, of the Sun City Fire Department, Deb Johnson, of the Sun City West Fire Department, Michelle Dionisio of Interfaith Services, and Karen Wellert. First Subscriber Plays Role in Casting Arizona Broadway Theatre at Senior Events
September 2005
The Arizona Broadway Theatre's 2005-2006 premiere season has become a hot ticket for season subscribers hungry for a taste of the total dinner theatre experience. Subscription packages debuted at the Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery in Glendale on Feb. 2 at a reception for members of three chambers of commerce - Glendale, Peoria and Northwest Valley. More than 350 guests attended the event where Karen Wellert, president of Adultcare Assistance Home Care, became the first in a long line of Arizona Broadway Theatre season subscribers.
When it opens on Nov. 4, the 32,000-square-foot theatre located at the intersection of 77th Ave. and Paradise Lane in Peoria, will convey an atmosphere of professional theatre and elegant dining all provided for under one roof. Wellert applauded the dinner theatre's choice location, which she noted, "I was especially excited the theatre was coming to the West Valley, not just for myself, but because of the wonderful senior population."
Wellert, a long-time supporter of seniors, has been a caregiver for 35 years and is the owner of Adultcare Assistance in Sun City. As of June 30, the organization celebrated its 10th year of providing a full range of caregiver services that enable clients to maintain a safe, comfortable lifestyle right at home. As a toast to the Arizona Broadway Theatre, Adultcare Assistance offered to introduce the dinner theatre to retirement community residents at a series of wine and cheese parties.
The Forum at Desert Harbor, a Sunrise Senior Living community in Peoria, received the first sneak peek of the dinner theatre's premiere season at a wine and cheese party on March 30. The retirement residents applauded the seven-show lineup that casts off on Nov. 4 with Anything Goes, followed by the splashy musicals Brigadoon, Man of La Mancha, Damn Yankees, H.M.S. Pinafore, and Big River, and a musical revue The World Goes 'Round.
The Adultcare Assistance wine and cheese parties continued to acquaint seniors with the Arizona Broadway Theatre as they made the rounds from Freedom Plaza Life Care Campus and Desert Winds Retirement Community in Peoria, to The Woodmark at Sun City and The Heritage Palmeras in Sun City, to EPOCH Assisted Living of Sun City West and Chaparral Winds Retirement Community in Surprise. The Arizona Broadway Theatre also spoke at the Summer School for Seniors program that Adultcare Assistance co-sponsored with Oxford Retirement and Estate Planning in Sun City. Sixty participants attended the three sets of special-interest classes in June, July and August. The Arizona Broadway Theatre's company manager James Rio offered insights into the "Audition Process" and managing artistic director Joseph Martinez entertained thoughts of the "History of the Broadway Theatre."
Wellert noted, "Purely by coincidence my brother-in-law Mike Wellert is the program development director of the Missoula Children's Theatre," where Martinez acted as production manager for 13 years prior to moving to the Northwest Valley from Montana in July.
Martinez's new job will be more demanding, requiring him to direct all seven award-winning musical productions on the Arizona Broadway Theatre's 2005-2006 playbill. These top-notch theatrical presentations will be made even more delectable with the elegant dining experience value-priced at an affordable average subscription cost per ticket of $37.
Season subscribers are already enjoying a taste of the dinner theatre's V.I.P. treatment as Arizona Broadway Theatre box office personnel explain the priority seating options and ticket exchange privileges. The dinner-and-show packages feature a variety of times and prices ranging from four shows starting at $132 to all seven shows starting at $210. Discounts for groups of 20 or more are also available.
Individual ticket sales debut on Sept. 19. From Tuesday through Saturday, elegant dining will begin at 6:15 p.m., followed by the show at 8 p.m. The Arizona Broadway Theatre also presents a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee with lunch at 12:15 p.m., a 1 p.m. Sunday matinee with brunch at 11:15 a.m., and a 7 p.m. Sunday twilight show with dinner at 5:15 p.m.

President Karen Wellert of Adultcare Assistance, a provider of professional caregiver services, became the Arizona Broadway Theatre's first subscriber on Feb. 2.
She continues to play an active role in spotlighting the dinner theatre at a host of community events.

Award Recognizes Remarkable Caregivers
August 2005
Karen Wellert, president of Adultcare Assistance in Sun City, has announced the top three finalists nominated for the first Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award.
Tapping into her expertise as a caregiver herself for 35 years, Wellert established Adultcare Assistance’s semi-annual award to recognize the outstanding service given by other devoted caregivers. In April when Wellert was honored as one of the five 2005 Arizona Woman Golden Heart of Business finalists, she announced, “I’m going to continue to be active in our community with the founding of the new Abundant Community Program.”
“I believe in giving back to the community,” Wellert reaffirmed recently. “The award is open to the community, and will be ongoing for years to come.”
Adultcare Assistance received nineteen nominations by June 30 for the first Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award. Judging the entries was an award panel of social service professionals including: Sun City Community Foundation’s, Jim Green; Sun City Fire Department’s, Stacy Bodenstedt; Sun City West Fire Department’s, Deb Johnson; Interfaith Services’, Michelle Dionisio; and Adultcare Assistance’s, Karen Wellert.
The Adultcare Assistance nominees were given glowing reviews laced with such desirable qualities as “devoted,” “compassionate,” “trustworthy,” and “ thoughtful.” However, Wellert confided no Adultcare Assistance caregivers were selected among the finalists. “The competition was fairly judged,” Wellert assured. “The three finalists are volunteers, not employed by any company.”
The top three Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award finalists are Earline Ferguson, Felicia Belle McGuckin, and Irene Lincoln all of Sun City. The strong thread of support these caregivers provide enabled them to weave their way to the top of the entrant nomination forms.
The judges will honor the finalists with a private luncheon to be held on August 18 at the Palmbrook Country Club’s Vista Grill Restaurant in Sun City. The winning caregiver will receive a $1,000 U.S. Savings Bond, and the runner-ups will each receive savings bonds for $100.
Adultcare Assistance invites the community to submit nominations for the next Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award through midnight December 31, 2005. The nominated caregiver may be a family member; volunteer with a hospital or hospice organization; medical professional; private caregiver; or an employee at an independent, assisted living, or skilled nursing community.

Phoenix Business Journal Spotlights Community Service Pacesetter
May 27, 2005
Adultcare Assistance founder and president Karen Wellert was featured in a full-page Business Journal profile: "Karen Wellert: A lifetime of service." The article by Gina Keating asserts that the home health care industry hasn't been the same since Karen Wellert arrived. It sketches Wellert's life from her first job at age 16 up to her recent decision to forego a franchise opportunity because she'd "no longer control the company's brand and reputation." It wasn't about money, she says. ACA has always represented superior quality and service, and Wellert wants to ensure that they continue to raise the bar.
A recent company endeavor is the Arizona All Star Caregivers Award. Twice a year, in recognition of caregiving excellence, a $1,000 US savings bond goes to one of five finalists reviewed by a distinguished panel of social service professionals. The award applications can be found on the ACA website.
One of the top five 2005 finalists nominated for the Golden Heart of Business award given by The Arizona Woman Who's Who in Business, Wellert gives a great deal of time to serving her community. She collaborates with many businesses and nonprofits to offer programs, information, and entertainment to Northwest Valley seniors. That's why Karen Wellert is known as the partner of choice for community service projects.

April 8, 2005
SUN CITY, Ariz. - The Arizona Woman Who's Who in Business Luncheon on April 7 at The Arizona Biltmore in Phoenix offered a wholehearted salute to business leaders in the community.
Karen Wellert, president of Adultcare Assistance in Sun City, was honored to be among the top five finalists nominated for the Golden Heart of Business award. The magazine's annual awards luncheon attracted 800 people, including Wellert's staff, family, and friends who are fans of her selfless devotion to senior services.
At the heart of the program, it was announced that Denise Resnik, co-founder and board president of the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center, was named the 2005 Arizona Woman Golden Heart of Business award recipient. However, Wellert's contributions to the community always make her feel like a winner, as she concurred, "It is an honor just being nominated."
Being one of five finalists remained reason enough to celebrate, so Wellert's husband, Pat, opened their Peoria home for a cocktail party on April 8 to toast the continued success of all the nominees.
"I was very excited to be able to share the reception with the other finalists," Karen Wellert remarked. Also mingling among the cocktail party guests were numerous senior service and healthcare professionals who highly regard the in-home caregiver services provided by Adultcare Assistance.
The cocktail party offered a tasteful blend of conversation and she added, "It was elegantly catered with hors d'oeuvres by Heaven Sent."
The heavenly scent of Heaven Sent catering enticed guests to get the dish on each other while sampling yet another appetizer. Heaven Sent's chef Michael Brown recounted, "Tonight we served coconut shrimp with a Caribbean sauce; chicken etouffee; roulade de boeuf; smoked salmon, cream cheese and dill on pumpernickel; imported cheese; and Louisiana crab cakes."
Wellert's recipe for success comes from keeping her heart in the right place. As a caregiver for 35 years, she was a gem even before being honored as one of the five Golden Heart of Business finalists. She noted, "I'm going to continue to be active in our 'community with the founding of the new Abundant Community Program."

Cure for Alzheimer's is focus of fundraiser

March 2005
The Desert Southwest Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association was the beneficiary of a recent gala event, which raised $35,743 to help find a cure for Alzheimer's disease. An Affair to Remember was held at the West Valley Art Museum and was co-chaired again this year by the successful team of Karen Wellert of Adultcare Assistance and Val Litchy of Encore Senior Village at Peoria.
An Affair to Remember included an elegant buffet dinner and hundreds of silent auction items. More than 300 attendees bid on everything from vacation packages to elegant time pieces. Original works of art, created by Alzheimer's patients, were highly sought after auction items.
Miriam Hollingshead of Interfaith Services was the successful bidder on an elegant "date night" basket donated by Arrowhead Community Bank, which also included a $200 savings bond. Patrick Wellert, of Adultcare Assistance took home an unusual hand crafted time piece by Calibri, which was donated by Oxford Retirement & Estate Planning of Sun City.
Local favorites Jim Green and Jackie Schneider-Borresenon (Ms. Senior Arizona 1995) entertained on the museum's baby grand piano.
Although many things about Alzheimer's remain a mystery, research continues to bring us a better understanding of the disease, more accurate diagnoses, and more effective treatments. For more information on Alzheimer's disease, visit the web site at www.alz.org. Events such as An Affair to Remember are an integral part of educating the public and raising money for research into the cause and possible cure of this heart-breaking and distressing disease. “We know that seniors are frequently being transported in private vehicles by their caregivers,” says Thom Gyder, President of Wilhelm Automotive. “We want to be sure that our elderly population remains safe and comfortable during the hot summer months to come.”
Gyder contacted Karen Wellert, President of Adultcare Assistance, to offer free vehicle safety checks to all caregivers. Local Business Urges Community to Show Support for Dial-A-Ride Sun Cities Area Transit
Karen Wellert, President of Adultcare Assistance, has sent out a flyer to the community:
Dear Friends of SCAT: The local Dial-A-Ride - serving Sun City, Sun City West and Youngtown — needs our help. Earlier this year they kicked off a fund drive in hopes of raising $200,000 to meet the cost of operating the transit system. To date, they’ve raised $125,000 and are still in need of $75,000. SCAT has no taxing authority. Fifty percent of its revenue comes from donations from residents, businesses and local community organizations. The fees charged to riders are intentionally kept low so that SCAT’s services remain available to everyone — but those fees fall short of covering SCAT’s actual cost to provide those services.
A cutback in SCAT’s services would have a dramatic impact on everyone who lives and work in the Sun Cities. Our citizens would have to find alternative (and no doubt more expensive) transportation. Small businesses that rely on SCAT to deliver customers would see a drop in business. Health-care providers and community organizations, too, would feel the pain.
Let’s not allow that to happen. As a business serving the Sun Cities, I’m asking everyone to step up and show their support for SCAT. Residents, businesses and community organizations: everyone needs to do what they can during this critical time to assist our local Dial-A-Ride service. I urge you to contact them at 623-977-8363 to make arrangements to show your support.
Please help. Even if you don’t now use SCAT, there’s a good chance that sometime in the future you’re going to need their services. Let’s all be sure they’re here when we need them! Thanks.

Governor proclaims Health Care Decisions Week
By Elizabeth Jackman. Reprinted with permission of Peoria Times
November 3, 2005
Gov. Janet Napolitano has proclaimed the week of Nov. 6 as Health Care Decisions Week, and to celebrate, Adultcare Assistance (ACA) has a full lineup of activities planned. The week will begin with a free advance directives presentation at 9 a.m. Nov. 7 at the Sun City main library, 16828 N. 99th Ave.
"We want to really bring awareness so people will hold open discussions with their families as far as their choices for medical care and power of attorney," ACA President Karen Wellert said. "The recent publicity surrounding the case of Terri Schiavo in Florida demonstrates the importance of talking about your wishes with loved ones and putting your wishes in writing."
Arizona law strongly supports the right of an adult to make future medical treatment choices, Wellert said, and future health care decisions when written down, become advance directives.
Statistics provided by Health Care Decisions (HCD), a project of Hospice of the Valley, state that less than 25 percent of Americans have expressed their thoughts in writing about how they wish to be cared for at the end of life.
ACA will be distributing free health care decision packets provided to them by HCD, which include forms for a Health Care (Medical) Power of Attorney with mental health authority, a Health Care Directive (Living Will) and instructions for completing the forms.
Also included is information on why and how to have your advance directives stored in the Arizona Advance Health Care Directive Registry created by the Arizona Legislature in May 2004.
"It is about empowering individuals," Wellert said. "It is your right to decide. Give your family and loved ones a gift by planning ahead and completing your advance directives."
During the Health Care Decisions Week, ACA will also hold an open house with a continental breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., Nov. 9, 10 and 11, at its new corporate headquarters, 10404 W. Coggins Drive, Suite 118. There will be free health care decision packets handed out, door prizes, and Wellert will be on hand to answer any question guests may have about advance directives. Wellert will also be addressing the Northwest Valley Chamber of Commerce breakfast Nov. 8.
ACA is a privately owned company dedicated to providing affordable independent living for seniors. Services are provided for those living in a private home or apartment, a retirement community or a hospital or rehabilitation facility, who need assistance with daily chores. Examples of help ACA provides are bathing and dressing; medication set-up reminders; grocery shopping; meal planning and preparation; laundry and light housekeeping; and transportation for medical appointments.
In addition to its corporate headquarters in Sun City, ACA also has a Peoria office: Desert Winds, 20554 N. 101st Ave.
Call (623) 977-2223 for reservations to the free Nov. 7 presentation. For more information on advanced directives, visit www.hcdecisions.org, or call (602) 222-2229. Reach the reporter at (623) 847-4615.
November 9, 2005
PEORIA, Arizona. Chef Michael Brown, owner of Heaven Sent Catering, offered to spice up the prizes for the next Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award by contributing his personal chef services to the mix of corporate sponsors. The semi-annual award was established by Karen Wellert, president of Adultcare Assistance in Sun City, to recognize the outstanding service provided by devoted caregivers. The personal chef's tasteful contribution includes a private dinner party for four in the award-winner's home.
The All-Star Award recipient will receive the royal treatment from a master chef who has cooked for such notable celebrities as California governor/actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, comedian Richard Pryor, boxer Sugar Ray Leonard, and Basketball Hall of Famer Bill Russell. Food critics raved about his Michael's Backstreet Café in New Jersey, and when he relocated to Peoria, Ariz. He says, "The name Heaven Sent Catering came from fellow church members that said, 'Your cooking is heaven sent.'"
Nomination forms for the next Arizona All-Star Caregiver Award are available online through midnight December 31, 2005 at the Adultcare Assistance Web site. The nominated caregiver may be a family member; volunteer with a hospital or hospice organization; medical professional; private caregiver; or an employee at an independent, assisted living, or skilled nursing community. For more information call Adultcare Assistance at (623) 977-2223.
"Some of the most important people that I have served are probably some of the least important people in society," Chef Michael acknowledges of the countless taste buds his cuisine has satisfied over the years.
"The real impetus to my being involved in this business was an ultimatum that I had at the age of 14, when I was the oldest male in the household. My Mom could not afford to buy me school clothes, but I liked to dress and said, 'Don't worry about it. I'll get a job.' The first place I found had a man sweeping in front of his restaurant and I said, 'I can do that for you.' From 9th to 12th grade I worked for him washing dishes and peeling potatoes, working my way up to short-order cook."
He recalls, "A couple of months into the job, I was mopping the floor when my mother walked by and she looked at me in a proud way. At that point something said to my spirit, 'This is what you'll be doing with your life. One day you will be opening your own restaurant.' From that point I made up my mind that every job I took was toward that end."
He pursued his dream through hands-on restaurant experience and private lessons with seasoned chefs in French cuisine. Now, Chef Michael's unique combination of spices and fresh ingredients has given him sweet success in the catering business.
"I like to cook in a style of layering the food, meaning that I'm not just seasoning only the meats, but may be seasoning also the cooked vegetables that go with the meat," Chef Michael explains. "The foods have a tiered level of flavors, so that every time you take a bite you're getting a crescendo effect of continual flavors bursting inside your mouth. It creates an eating experience."
As the Heaven Sent slogan beckons "Experience a Culinary Adventure That's Out of This World" by calling Chef Michael Brown at (623) 687-6951 for an appointment.
